Where did the idea for your business come from?
Ultimate Travel Club is the brainchild of a team of industry experts, who saw the opportunity to help travel come back smarter in the wake of the challenges of the pandemic. The Ultimate Travel Club team knows that consumers know the benefits of subscription services. Their vision, therefore, is to create a growing community of like-minded travelers who have the confidence to explore more because they always pay less. How did you know there was a market for it?
The company was born out of what we saw during the pandemic and the evolution of the world of travel. We know the travel industry has had extremely difficult years and we want to help it recover by making travel more accessible to everyone. Travel is likely to be more expensive with less choice in the short term, and there is a huge pent-up demand for people to escape and explore. We want to help people travel again and basically bring back travel, better. Ultimate Travel Club members can access up to 40% off at over 900,000 hotels. Subscription models are everywhere (home-cooked meals, gin, makeup, toilet rolls and other everyday items) and people are comfortable with them. It’s a proven model that works. It’s the subscription billing model that allows us to offer trips at commercial prices. And we love the travel industry and know there is such an appetite to re-explore the world – which is why it is important for us to be a part of getting it back on track after such a difficult time.
What were you doing before starting your business?
Stephen is the founder of Pimento – a network of dedicated marketing agencies where we provide clients with access to 5,500 marketing professionals in 200 agencies and consulting firms. We draw on an unrivaled network of specialists, to ensure that the right experience and the right talent meet brand challenges at the right time. Brett has spent the past 12 years running a consulting business providing strategic advice to travel, leisure and hospitality businesses.
Have you always dreamed of starting a business?
I am fortunate to have been involved in quite a few start-ups – some funded by larger companies, and others as a consultant to entrepreneurs. Ultimate Travel Club is the first business I started from scratch entirely based on an idea I had, without the backing of a large company. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. It was exciting – and a little scary – to see this come true.
How did you finance your business?
Before the launch, we launched a crowdfunding campaign inviting investors to join our Club 500 so that they feel involved in the development of the company. We raised a significant amount of money which contributed to technological development by ensuring that at launch we offered the best customer experience. What we do is member driven, so we needed to recruit a fan club of engaged and interested people who were ready to get involved and have their say. In return, we offered them a one-time, heavily discounted membership and a wide range of exclusive benefits, including the ability to invest and attend special events.
