We don’t want to pressure you. But there are only 11 places left for our annual West Travel Club New Norcia weekend (April 30-May 1). And what better way to hone your now-rusty photography and writing skills before you hit the road again, than by learning from the experts?
Or maybe you just want to hang out, enjoy the company and soak up the unique atmosphere of New Norcia? It’s very good for us.
New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town and right here in WA, just a 90 minute drive northeast of Perth. It was founded in 1847 by Rosendo Salvado, a former member of the Spanish Benedictine monastery of St Martin in Compostela. There are still a small number of Benedictine monks in residence.
But think of the old convent housing a superb art gallery, museum and gift shop. The stately inn, built in 1927 and recently returned to its former function after operating as a hotel since the 1950s.
The Saint-Gertrude and Saint-Ildephonse colleges, with their spectacular chapels adorned with ornate wood carvings and restored Baroque-style paintings and frescoes. The atmospheric cemetery. The Education Center containing the European Space Agency Interpretive Center and the historic Abbey Press.
The monastery and its guest house and its chapels. The splendid abbey church. The Old Flour Mill and Interpretive Center at Mission Cottages. Further southeast, a marked walk along the Moore River. A truck stop with a surprisingly good menu.
So much to see. So much to do. The perfect place for a weekend.
NEW NORCIA 2022
Some of us love photography. Some of us like to write. Some are just looking for a nice weekend. That’s why we offer you three choices:
Come just for the weekend, meet the crew, hang out with like-minded people, explore, rest a bit and come to our concert.
Learn skills and techniques during our travel writing sessions.
Photowalk with professionals and refine your image creation. This year, the emphasis (!) will be on using your mobile phone’s camera.
In other words, there is a package for everyone on New Norcia Weekend Away on Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1, 2022, staying in a large renovated building, and with all meals included. We have limited numbers.
