A travel agent that has won a string of national awards is set to be sold as its founder retires after more than two decades at the helm.
Journeys a la Carte, Uttoxeter, has been operating in the town for over 25 years and has won awards including Best UK Travel Agency with The Guardian and The Observer.
However, it will pass to new ownership after founder and owner Margaret May decided to retire over the Christmas period.

The business will be taken over by Avventura Group, which also owns Avventura Travels, a luxury tour operator based in Northamptonshire.
Ms. May founded the company in 1995 in Market Place.
She said: “Journeys a la Carte has been a huge part of my life for over 25 years and I’m extremely proud of its success – a success due to the amazing and amazing Journeys team, our wonderful customers and tour operators. we work with, as well as the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) and the Travel Trust Association (TTA), who have always been there to help lead the way.
“I am now retiring delighted to know that Richard (Hadfield – CEO of Avventura) will carry Journeys and the team forward into a happy and secure future.”
Mr Hadfield said: “Journeys a la Carte is an exceptional travel company with a strong reputation for in-depth knowledge, honest and unbiased advice and unrivaled expertise and we really aim to make it that way.
“We are delighted that Margaret has agreed to sell the business to us and that she continues to be available to us with her local knowledge and expertise to achieve a smooth ownership transition. We wish her a happy and well-deserved retirement.
“Avventura Travels provides bespoke travel services for clients seeking highly personalized itineraries and our business philosophy, and that of Journeys a la Carte, are very similar.
“Our overriding goals are to provide itineraries that exactly match our customers’ wishes and to provide the highest level of service by delivering travel experiences that will open minds and create lasting memories.
“The team has been very supportive of our acquisition, and it’s nice to be able to give them job certainty in these difficult times. We have very exciting plans to strengthen and grow the business by investing in the IT and Marketing.
“There is huge pent-up travel demand and holiday sales have already picked up this week following the government’s announcement that testing rules have been relaxed for fully vaccinated travellers.”
